Naughty Nuri's @ Desa Sri Hartamas

Been wanting to give the ribs at Naughty Nuri's a try for a while now and finally had the chance to when our high school friend organised a dinner gathering. It was really great to see an old friend for the first time this year (even though we live in the same city now!) and also meet new ones.

Naughty Nuri's
The menu was pretty extensive but it was clear what one has to try here. Pork Ribs!!! We got Naughty Nuri's 1995 Signature BBQ Spare Ribs. Marinated in their special Balinese sauce, the fall-off-the-bone meat was succulently delicious.

Going by a colleague's recommendation, we got the Red Hot Chilli Pepper Truffle Fries. Exactly what the name says, these deep fried fries are tossed in truffle oil and topped with chilli flakes. We just couldn't stop picking at these uber sinful potato goodness.

We did order the Nasi Goreng but was too pre-occupied with the ribs and fries so no photo oops...it was only okay anyway! Shared between 4 people, these three dishes kept us happy for a bit...

After some chit-chatting, it was time for dessert.

The Sizzling Bacon Chocolate Cake was a sight to behold. The chocolate ganache was yummy but there was hardly any bacon in it. Definitely a gimmick and overpriced, but we just HAD to order it.

And finally, the Ubud Style Sugar Refinery Bacon Banana. Deep fried banana rolled in bacon. Sounds strange right? It was a little. The saltiness of the bacon just didn't sit well with the sweetness of the honey coated banana. Another gimmick but what the heck, just HAD to try it at least once!

Verdict: Not the best ribs I've had but by far one of the better ones in town so will probably head back if and when cravings demand it. Mission now is to find BETTER and TASTIER ribs.

Sugar Rush @ Section 16, PJ

Big fan of cakes? Head down to Sugar Rush to satisfy your sweet tooth (or teeth rather!). First of all, Google Maps needs to update this location coz it is definitely inaccurate as Bravo and I found out through a slight tour of the massive bungalow section of Section 16.

We were warmly greeted by the famous Cake Runway, which is a glorious display of the delectable cakes.

Tempting as it was to jump straight into the sugar bandwagon, we started with a savoury dish - the Steak and Vegetable Pie. Fairly generous with the steak pieces, but definitely not their signature dish.

Now, down to serious business - the cakes!!!

Words cannot describe the Chocolate Ganache with Salted Buttercream. Rich, dense and moist, this chocolatey slice of heaven was simply ecstasy.

The Lemon Poppyseed striked a good balance between sour and sweet with a generous serving of poppy seeds.

I could stop here but why would I? Yep, just couldn't resist temptation. The other cakes were just calling out to us to return so we did...two days later! The lovely staff gave us a warm welcome back so that was sweet.

We were in for a shock though as there were only four options to choose from as they were awaiting delivery of the other cakes. We settled for the Kit-Kat Strawberry while we waited for the cakes to arrive.

This vanilla butter cake topped with strawberry pie filling, wrapped in kit-kat bars and filled with chocolate chip buttercream was simple yet delicious. As one of the staff put it, this is often overlooked as one of the forgotten children that's left behind. I'd still go for the Chocolate Ganache over this anytime though. =P

The long awaited Coffee Oreo with Peanut Butter frosting finally arrived after almost an hour. Was it worth the wait? Definitely fresh and yummy, but lacks the oomph somehow. That Chocolate Ganache really trumped them all.

Verdict: Definitely one of the better cake cafes out there. I can foresee many more visits to come in future.

Fun fact from Bravo this time around - one could potentially test positive in a drug test if they consume too much poppy seeds, which are used in the production of heroin.

An extra piece of science from Bravo on our second trip back (which almost caused hair loss since his memory failed him): Saturation - the degree to which something has been dissolved or absorbed to the fullest extent possible. This came up as he was scooping far too many teaspoons of sugar into his tea and I remembered vaguely learning this way back when.

Pizza Brava @ Desa Sri Hartamas

That time of the week again! The original plan was to head for Korean but I'd just remembered that I had a 10km run to do the following morning and experience has taught me that spicy food and running do not go hand in hand. But carbs is definitely not a problem so off we went to Pizza Brava for some pizza and pasta.

Where the wood fire pizza is made right at the front of the restaurant.
It's a nice, open kitchen concept where the pizza is made right where you can see it. Didn't actually realise this until we noticed the pizza being served coming from the front of the restaurant. We were also pretty fascinated with the Vespas!

Vespas!
The dishes plated pretty quickly. The Mozzarella in Carrozza - deep fried breaded mozzarella was delicious! Coupled very nicely with the pizzaiola sauce, which was pretty much a wholesome tomato-based goodness.

Mozzarella in Carrozza
Then, the pizza! The Milano - perfectly baked thin-crusted pizza topped with tomatoes, cheese, beef pepperoni, turkey ham (Yes, turkey. First thing Bravo noticed was how halal the restaurant was), and chillies. Couldn't consume this fast enough. Now I'm not usually a fan of thin crust but this sufficiently won me over, like the one at Verona Trattoria did before.

The Milano
Finally, the Lasagna di Carne. A classic beef lasagna, this was a huge disappointment. There was just something missing. To Bravo, the mince was too chewy. As for me, it was strangely bitter. Never again.

Lasagna di Carne
Dessert, anyone? Of course.

Super rich and creamy, the Panna Cotta con Pesca was yummy. Just a tad too creamy for my liking, which led to Bravo almost overdosing on it haha..

Panna Cotta con Pesca
Last but not least, the Creme Brulee. The crisp layer of caramel was just the perfect match for the custard. Who knew a small cup could pack such a delightful dessert.

Verdict: Will be back for the pizza and dessert!

Yeast Bistronomy @ Bangsar

It's the Labour Weekend and naturally, what better way to kick start it than with a foodie adventure. Poor Bravo just had to be befallen with a cold so couldn't join in the fun much to my niece, Big C's dismay.

So, there we were at Yeast Bistronomy for some French bread and pastries. Unsurprisingly, like the other cafes in Bangsar, we had to wait in line for a table. We took this opportunity to feast our eyes on the pastry display and boy did it not help with our rumbling tummies.

The selection at Yeast.
The wait wasn't too long thank goodness. We quickly made our orders and first up - Croissant au Amandes (Almond Croissant) and Pain au Chocolat (Chocolate Danish). So fresh and delectable! My sis, the big choc danish fan approves of this so I'm taking her word for it.

Croissant au Amandes (RM7.5) and Pain au Chocolat (RM5)
Plain and simple, the Oeufs a La Coque - 2 Soft Boiled Eggs with Finger Toast was a hit with my niece, Little E as she munched happily away.

Oeufs a La Coque (RM9)
The Pain Perdu aux Pommes Caramelisees (Brioche French Toast with Caramelised Apples) was nice and fluffy, and Big C's new favourite after the chocolate danish! She is most definitely my niece! The apples were bitter for some reason though so that was a bit of a letdown.

Verdict: Will def be back for more. Their dinner and dessert selection look very inviting indeed.
